PAHIATUA, July 31. The annual social in connection with the festival of St. James’ Anglican Church was held at Konini last night, and despite the inclement weather was very well attended. The gathering took the form of a euchre party and dance and patrons spent a most enjoyablo time. In the euchre tournament the gentlemen’s prize was won by Mr G. Howard Ball, and Mr C. Johnski was second. Mrs H. Avery won the ladies’ first prize, Mrs J. Miller being second. The weekly icuchro party held at Konini on Monday evening was very largloy attended. The prize-winners wore: Gentlemen, Mr R. Baker 1, Mr McAleer 2; ladies, Mrs A. Judd 1 1, Mrs L. Humphrey 2. Messrs J. Algie, C. Johnski, E. Hirst, A. Wade, and Miss Mabel Hirst provided the music as usual, and Mr W. Groves acted as M.C. Supper was dispensed. Tho euchre tournament series among friendly societies was continued last evening tho results being as follow:—Foresters beat tho Oddfellows, 33 —24; Druids beat the Fire - Brigade, 33—32. Mr C. C. Richardson, Government inspector of machinery, is on an official visit to Pahiatua and district. Messrs J. H. McSherry and Stewart Taylor commence a two months’ course at the Massey Agricultural College, Palmerston North, on Humphrey, tho youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs L. Humphrey, of Konini, is an inmato of tho Pahiatua Hospital having sustained a fracture of the left ’arm, her loft leg being also , badly bruised. The child accompanied her father to tho Konini railway station on Thursday morning, and while ho was returning with a load of fertilisers a dog rushed out and startled tho horse. As a result the girl was thrown off the dray, a wheel passing over her left arm and left leg. The little girl is a granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Johnski, of Masterton Road. No bankruptcies were recorded in Pahiatua last month. The total so far this year is two. No building permits were issued by the Town Clerk during the month. The County Clerk issued 28 motor drivers’ licenses and 16 were issued by tho Town Clerk. Heavy rain continues to fall Vocally. For the 24 houA up to 9 a.m. yesterday ,71in fell, and this morning tho downpour exceeded that figure.
