PRISON INMATE SHOT.
MISTAKEN FOR KANGAROO. Received July 24, 10.0 a.m. fc/DNEY, July 24. Mistaken for a kangaroo, Herbert O’Brien, aged 42, an inmate of the Brookefield prison camp, near Bombala, was fatally shot by a warder. O’Brien was to have been released in twelve days’ time after serving a sentence of 15 years. Because of his exemplary behaviour, O’Brien had been granted many privileges. Ho accompanied the warder on a kangaroo hunt. The official in the semi-darkness fired at a movement in the foliage. Rushing to the spot, lie found that O’Brien was seriously wounded in the groin.
