HOROWHENUA COUNTY ROADS

COMPLETION OF AYORKS ANTICIPATED.

The Main Highways Board, which is at present on a tour, visited Levin a few days ago, when they were met by the County Council and Borough Council representatives. Mr G. A. Monk, chairman of the Horowhenua County Council, told the board that the main request -was for sufficient money to complete its highways schedule. The council was very hopeful of completing the Levin-Whirokino highway within twelve months. Concerning the LevinTokomaru highway, Mr Monk stated that a large number of men had been employed under the No. 5 scheme. The Makerua-Tokomaru section was probably the most difficult portion to complete and the council had no money for this work at present. Probably some work would be done under the No. 5 scheme if the necessary material was available. With regard to the matter of making sufficient money available for the Levin-Whirokino highway, the chairman (Mr Furkert) said that the board were a little in the dark as to what money they would have available this year, but they would know shortly, and lie did not know of any reason why they should not have the money for this work; it was on the programme, and the board—just as the council did —would look forward to having it done ns quickly as possible. As to whether any monetary assistance could be granted on the unfinished portions of the Levin-Tokomaru highway, when labour was tised under No. 5 scheme for the relief of unemployment, he left this open, owing to the restrictions of that scheme, but advised the council to ascertain the cost of the work and to intimate what it could contribute.
