MARTON, Jan. 2.

- Messrs A. L. Wheeler and S. A. Gover, of Marton and Messrs J. Stewart and E. W. Donovan, of Hunterville, were competitors yesterday at the opening of the Wanganui tennis championship tourney. Wheeler beat L. H. Marchant in the first round and R. Graham in the second. Gover beat E. H. McDonald in the first round. Both the Hunterville men suffered defeat.

Frank Walter Barnes appeared before Mr A. J. B. Sicely, J.P., in the court today on a charge of theft of £l3 6s from a Wellington firm in March Inst, Accused was remanded to appear at Wellington.

MARTON, Jan. 4. Mr E. J. Wilde, “Mirfield,” supplies the following rainfall figures—During deceinber ,94in. of rain fell. The December average is 3.27 inches. The total for the 12 months was 32.15 inches, compared with an averago of 40.5 inches. A painful accident involving injuries which were, fortunately, not serious, befel a party bound from Marton for a swim at Eakariki on New Year’s afternoon. Those concerned were Clifford and Clarence Gordon, sons of Mr J. Gordon, Mill Street, and a nephew, Mr George Davies, with a friend Mr Kelvin Crowie. Messrs Davies and Crowie were on a motor cycle and tho two lads were on a push hike close behind. Suddenly, when in the vicinity of tho Crofton cross-roads, a calf jumped from behind a bush immediately in front of tho motor cyclists who, unable to stop, crashed into it, and fell heavily. The following cyclists were unable to avoid the object and. were capsized. Davies sustained abrasions necessitating surgical attention. Clarence Gordon suffered a hurt leg and bruises, while the others escaped with minor abrasions, Clothing suffered tho most heavily and the motor cycle was also damaged. The calf was not injured. The death occurred in the Wanganui Hospital on Friday of Mr Edward Chase, of Marton, at the ago of 79 years. A son of Hampshire, Mr Chase loft liis native land for New Zealand, arriving in Wellington in 1874. Coming to Marton, he set up in his trade, that of a coachbuilder, at Crofton, in 1875. The business was later moved to Marton. Of a quiet disposition, the late Mr Chase took little part in public affairs. His chief outside interest was the Foresters’ Lodge, of which he was one of the oldest members. His wife predeceased him by ten years, and the following members of the farpily are left—two sons. Jack and William (his other son died in the Great War), and three daughters, Mrs S. Whitehead, Northcliffe; Mrs F. Thompson, Crofton; and Mrs I. C. Poad, Wanganui.

At Marton on Saturday PoriAva defeated Hunterville, tho leading club in the cricket championship. Porewa batted first and scored 184 tor the loss of nine wickets, D. A. Cameron topping tho score with 64, whilst J. Marshall (16), R. Cameron (16), A. Harpur (12), R. P. Sherriff (24), J. D. Smith (11), A. Marshall (16) and FI. F. Arkwright (10) also reached double figures. Hunterville made a poor stand, M. YY ralden (10) and C. Bowick (11) being fhe highest scorers.
