RUSSELL ST. SCHOOL

FIRST ANNUAL BALL. AN ENJOYABLE FUNCTION. Outstanding success marked the first annual ball held by the Russell Street School last evening, when an excellent function took place in the Oddfellows’ Hall. Well organised, it met with liberal patronage, parents and children being present in large numbers. Bizarre costumes made a colourful spectacle,, and the atmosphere was one of infectious gaiety. Much credit was due to the ladies committee, of which Miss Anderson was convener and Mrs Munro secretary, for the general arrangements made, there being associated with them Mesdames Coombs, Orchard, Wasley, Dudfield, Campbell, De Vantier, .Doull, Sapwell, Macpherson, Coman, Jones, Matthews and Smith. Praise was also due to the headmaster (Mr F. C. Campbell) and the teaching staff (Misses Piercy, Berndtsen and Mclsaac) for the instruction which it was evident the pupils had received. They were prettily attired and thoroughly enjoyed themselves in the brightly festooned hall. Mr D. Morrison, chairman of the school committee, extended a cordial welcome to those present, and apologised for the unavoidable absence of Mr W. Collins, chairman of the Wanganui Education Board. He thanked all who had rendered generous assistance in the organising of the function. Mr Morrison paid a tribute to His Worship the Mayor (Mr A. J. Graham) for his kindly interest in the schools, and stated that the Mayor was always ready to officiate at such functions, despite his numerous, activities. The Mayor, who had officiated in a similar capacity at the Hokowhitu School ball, declared the function officially open, and stated that it was .an inestimable pleasure to do so. He added that three years ago lie had occupied the chair at a meeting called to impress upon the Wanganui Education Board _ the necessity for providing educational facilities in the Russell Street school area... The remarkable growth of the school following its establishment bore ample testimony to the need for its existence. It was well endowed with the services of a fine school committee, which had the assistance of a very energetic and gracious band of ladies. His Worship stated that no sacrifice was too great to make in the cause of education, and he urged the children to make the most of their opportunities and follow the exemplary character of their teachers. He trusted that they, would thoroughly enjoy themselves. There was a dainty supper and subsequently the adults took the floor for dancing. THE COSTUMES.
