LADIES’ GOLF

HAWKE’S BAY TITLE. WON BY MANAWATU PLAYER. In the final of the Hawke’s Bay. ladies’ amateur golf championship today Miss B. Gaisford (Manawatu) defeated Mies Pharazyn, 7 up and 5 to play. Both played splendid golf. Miss Gaisford continually outdrove her opponent, while both drove beautifully straight balls. The first hole was halved for four. Miss Gaisford obtained a lead at the next, when, after both drives safely negotiating a gap, Miss Pharazyn overshot her approach, the ball travelling right over the green. Miss Gaisford holed out for four to become one up. Bad luck followed Miss Pharazyn at the third when her second shot went over the bank to the right and Miss Gaisford won the hole for five. Both drove splendid balls to the edge of tjie green at the next hole, when the Manawatu' players sank her ball for three to win, Miss Pharazyn missing a short putt. The next two holes went to Miss Gaisford and the next was halved' Two faulty approach shots near the green at Shirley’s,put Miss Pharazyn another hole benind when Miss Gaisford sank her putt for five, making her six up. The last hole for the first half was won by Miss Gaisford for five, both ladies badly, topping their second shots. A brilliant effort was made by Miss Pharazyn to reduce the big lead gained by her opponent in the first half, but the steady play of that lady resulted in the next two holes being halved for five and six respectively. Miss Gaisford was now dormy at the twelfth hole. She addressed a moving ball, thereby losing the. hole to Miss Pharazyn who was now six down. The next hole decided the match in favour of Miss Gaisford' who holed out for four, making her 7 and 5 to play. Both gave a fine exhibition of golf which was greatly appreciated by the largo and interested audience.
