ADVANCING TRADE.
COUNCIL OF INDUSTRY. BRITISH PROPOSAL. LONDON, Sept. 19. Declaring that the British people are tired of the waste and extravagance of successive Governments and their slavish adherence to parties’ economic theories, which have lost all relation to facts of modern business life prominent industrialists, of whom Sir William Morris is chairman, have convened a meeting for September 25 to establish a National Council of Industry and Commerce, consisting of business men determined to secure the protection of the home market and the advance of inter-Empire trade. The conveners, who point out that the depth and persistence of industrial depression demand immediate action, include Lord. Melchett, Sir Woodman Burbidge, Sir Hugo Cunliffe-Owen, Sir Hugo Hirst, Sir Ernest Petter and Sir Felix Pole. Sir William Morris, Bart., is the wellknown motor manufacturers. Lord Melchett, formerly Sir Alfred Mond, is chairman of Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. Sir Woodman Burbidge is chairman and managing director of Harrod’s Stores. Sir Hugo Cunliffe-Owen is chairman of the British-American *l'obacco Co., and a director of the Midland Bank. Sir Hugo Hirst is managing director of tho General Electric Co. Sir Ernest Better is chairman of Potters, Ltd. Sir Felix Pole is chairman of Associated Electrical Industries.
