CLASHES IN BOMBAY
: : SERIOUS, SITUATION. HUNDREDS INJURED. REPEATED CHARGES BY POLICE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) DELHI, Sept. 18. Persistent vigorous picketing by the women Congress volunteers caused serious disturbances in Bombay yesterday. In repeated charges By the police to enable voters to reach the polling booths about 250 people were injured, and over 380 women and 18 men were arrested. The situation eventually became so serious that one candidate withdrew. The remaining three candidates were returned unopposed, and the polling was stopped, but further charges were necessary to disperse the crowds. Only 1400 out of 60,000 voted. " A young Bengali named Dinesh Chandra' Majuindar was sentenced to transportation for life by a special tribunal on a charge of conspiring to murder Sir Charles Tegart, the Police Superintendent.
