HIMATANGI CROSSING.

SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENT. Notification was received at yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu Comity Council that the Public Works Department and the Railway Department had decided to co-operate in the matter of improving the visibility on level crossings situated on main or subsidiary highways. Concerning the Himatangi crossing, the department made the following leport: “This is a 6kew crossing with road and railway grade level. There are no compulsory stop signs. The road traffic is fairlv heavy, but as the crossing is situated on a branch railway with liglrt traffic it is ot a dangerous one. The only improvement required is the keeping down of lupins on the railway reserve adjacent to the crossing. These lupins are very quick growing and should be attended to periodically. The visibility is good both ways.” Discussing the proposal, the chairman (Cr. W. E. Barber) recalled that in the plans and surveys made for the construction of the Himatangi-Rangi-otu Road into a main highway arrangements had been made for the straightening of this crossing, but, if anything, the crossing now was worse than it was before the work on the road was done. He had pointed the matter out to Mr Ronayne recently and had received an assurance that the matter would be rectified. At present the crossing was a dangerous one and the road could not be sealed. The letter was “received.”
