Mr J. McShane, late McAffer and McShane, has joined the staff of S. R. Waugh, m'ereliant tailor. A call from Knox Church, Dunedin, has been accepted by Rev. D. C. Herron, of St. David’s Church, Auckland. Mr V T . S. Penney, of Sandon, is at present at Rotorua where he is receiving much benefit from the treatment he is undergoing. Messrs W. E. Winks and J. 11. Stevens have been appointed to represent the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce at the town planning conference to be held at this centre on May 29. A London cable message reports the death of Rt. Hon. John Wheatley, Labour M.P. for the Shettleston Division of Glasgow since 1922, aged 61. He was Minister of Health in the 1924 Labour Government. It was stated at the meeting of the Manawatu County Council yesterday that Cr. W. E. Pearce, who is at pre : sent receiving treatment at Rotorua, is making good progress towards recovery of his health and is looking much better. The chairman (Cr. W T . E. Barber) and the county clerk and engineer (Messrs A. K- Drew and H. V. Bond respectively) were yesterday appointed to repesent the Manawatu County Council at the Town Planning conference to be held in Palmerston North. The death has occurred at Hawera of Mr C. Hughes, aged 80. Mr Hughes was born in Victoria and as a young man was attracted by the gold rush to Spring Creek. Ho came to New Zealand, in 1868, settling in Wellington. Later he settled at Hastings, where he took a keen interest in public life, being a member of the Borough Council and a prominent member of the Hibernian and Druide’ lodges. He was ako a member of > the licensing committee and at one time was president of the Hastings Bowling Club. About five years ago he went to Taranaki to live. The death is announced from Auckland of Mr It. A. Barr, who gained his early journalistic experience on the Otago Daily Times and Otago Witness. As “Pasquin” in the latter paper, Mr Barr had a very wide circle of readers, and he also had many friends in the theatrical profession. He also conducted the sporting page of the Daily Times prior to the war. A few years ago Mr Barr secured a position oil the New Zealand Herald, but owing to failing health he had latterly lived more or less in retirement. Mr Barr went home with the 1924 All Blacks, acting as correspondent for a number of papers. He is survived by Mrs Barr and three sons.
