HOROWHENUA COUNTY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) OTAKI, May 12. An Otaki party paid a visit to Kapiti yesterday and indulged in fishing. Tho day proved moot enjoyable. Members of the Otaki State School Committee met Messrs Evans and Sawyer at the school on Friday afternoon and discussed tho suggestion of ground improvement. It is hoped to expedite the matter as much as possible, and arrangements are being made accordingly. Several gardens at Otaki beach are at present looking very well, and besides beautiful flowers, fruit and vegetables grow to perfection. Few realise, however, that ripe strawberries may be picked in somo gardens, also passion fruit, etc., in largo quantities. The road to tho Tasman Beach is at present in very bad order, due to the largo amount of traffic that passes over it daily. A footpath is very badly needed for pedestrians hut, unfortunately, tho finances of tho borough aro low. The death occurred at Ohau on Saturday of Mrs Martha Trim, aged 81 years. Mr E. Furse, who is still an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital, is reported to be making good progress. The condition of Mr Joe Ay re is not so satisfactory. Mr Toni Bcvan, the well-known footballer, is in the Palmerston North Hospital for X-ray treatment. He received an injury in tho Otaki-Foxton match. Mrs Roiri and Miss Weno Tahiwi, together with their brother, Mr Henare Tahiwi, leavo this week for Sydney for the purpose of rendering Maori songs for reproduction at talkies. These talented singers will, no doubt, give pleasure to many. Mr and Mrs W. Burns Smith, who have been on holiday in Wellington, have returned home. They were accompanied by their daughter, Mrs O’Connor. The Otaki Golf Club’s medal round for men on Saturday was won by Mr F. S Simcox, net 72. Mr D. Wilkinson icturned net score 73. In the ladies’ fourball, Mrs W. 11. Gray and Miss B. Swabey The annual general meeting of the Otaki Beach Ratepayers’ Association was attended by 30 persons, including a number of ladies. Mr Byron Brown (patron of tho association) presided, and sain lie was very proud to occupy such a position. If it had been said, a lew years ago, that such a largo number would congregate in tho interests of the beach, it would not have been believed, but it was now very evident that progress had been made and that residents were anxious to see still greater progress. Air Byron Brown and Mrs Burgess gave a very fine elocutionary item, after which games were indulged in. Prizes were won as follow Association pairs, Mrs Burgess and Mr H. Whitchcll; tree competition, Air Little; euchre prizes, Airs Burgess and Air H. Nioolson; observation, Air Little. Air Brown, after presenting tho prizes", said that the credit for the evening’s enjoyment was due to Airs Adnams, and he trusted both Mr and Airs Adnams would remain long with them.
