COMMITTEE MEETING. The monthly meeting of the College Street Sehool Committee was held last night, Mr W. R. Taylor being in rlie chair. Also present were Messrs C. L. Mowleni. l’\ H. Tucker, H. RThorburn, A. Worboys, A. W. M.scdonneli, V/. F. Cutler and P. W. Barnard (secretary). An apology for absence was received from Mr 8.- AV. Oliver. Prior to commencing the business the chairman welcomed the new members of the committee, expressing the hope that they would co-operate with the re-elected members for the welfare of the school. A letter was received from Mrs L. E. Bale, enclosing a donation to the fund for providing the school w*t.i piper hand towels. The Minister of Education forwarded a letter in reply to the resolution adopted at the householders’ meeting urging the completion of the now school building. The Minister stated that the Wanganui Education Board had not yet forwarded its list of requirements in order of urgency, hut that when this document arrived consideration would be given to the matter. —The committee decided to write to the Wanganui Education Board requesting them to placo the College Street School at the top of the urgent list. . . . . Accounts amounting to £l2 4s fid were passed for payment. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster (Mr W. A. Swinbourn) who was absent, forwarded lus report which stated that the roll was '>2B with an average attendance tor the term of 487. The school broke upon Friday, 9th inst., ior a fortnight’s term holiday. Seventy-eignt Bo r ou"h library books liad been received. While glad to receive these, they foil f.n* short of the Mr Cowles of tire Education Department, and Miss Valentine, a supervisor of special classes, bad visited toe school. The headmaster recommended that the committee sanction the purchasing of a duplicating machine. A recommendation was also made that a new lawn mower he purchased, the report was adopted. GENERAL. Dissatisfaction was expressed at he lowering of the school’s capitation, while the expenses in connection wit’r the school were steadily increasing. Hie decrease in the capitation is due to a decrease in the roll number. On Mr Cutler’s motion, it was decided to refer the matter to the School Committees’ Association. A sub-commit-tee was appointed to investigate the caretaker’s duties, and to report to the next meeting. With the occupation of the new building, increased cleaning has been entailed. It was decided to write to the \\ an <r,anui Education Board making an .nquiry as to when the proposed draniimprovemeiits will be carried out as no beautifying in front of the new school can bo done till the draining is completed. The committee decided to form subcommittees as was done last year for the purposes of better administration. Tho chairman is to draw up these committees. The chairman stated that the special class was proving lery satisfactory, and that all fears as to its success had been dispelled. There was only one fault, namely, that the limit of 16 children imposed, excluded a number of children deserving this special tuition. The purchasing of a duplicator was deferred till the headmaster is present to discuss the advisability of obtaining the machine. It was decided to purchase a new lawnmower. The desirability of making a sand pit for the young children was discussed, but its construction was, deferred till tire commit!ee ascertains whether the proposed site would bo broken up for the purpose of laying drainage pipes.
