BULLS

RUGBY FOOTBALL. HUNTERVILLE (12) v. BULLS (8). (From Our Own Correspondent.) BULLS, May 12. The above seniors met on Bulls Domnin on Saturday afternoon in cool, bright weather, tho conditions being favourable to good football. The game, however, was a straggling one, due no doubt to tho fact that each club was without the services of several of its best players, who were playing in the Possibles v. Probables match at Wanganui. The game was played at a fast clip from 6tart to finish, and the visitors, by reason of their better combination in tho rearguard, showed to most advantage, and deserved their win. Towards the finish there was a fair amount of unnecessary hard play and a good deal of talk, the home'side being responsible for the latter. Mr Howard took a firm stand, otherwise it appeared that there might have been trouble. Hunterville won the toss and defended the western goal, Bulls kicking off in tho face of a troublesome sun. Bulls forwards were immediately aggressive, and from a penalty near half-way Timmins's long shot fell under tho bar. Bulls attacked again, but Duncan marked and found the line. The red backs then opened up play, but solid tackling broke down a promising attack. Duncan received a knock, and was replaced by Stewart. The homo forwards again swarmed on Hunterville’s line, and twice they were nearly over. Mulling by Bulls backs saw play revert to home quarters, where Baker had an incffctual shot at goal. Shanley cut in and kicked over McKenzie’s head, Bulls being lucky to save. Again tho red backs swung into action, but McKenzie held them out. A period of ragged play was relieved by a nice run by Ingram, but Lunn failed to take his pass. Rowe relieved with a long lino kick. Red backs and black forwards held the upper hand in turn, Shanley and Haywood doing good work for tho visitors, and Jack Homes, W. Wereta and C. Campbell for tho homo team. Still was well grassed by Lunn when looking dangerous. Davis dribbled back to tho Huntorville line, where, after a hot piece of play, the ball came out to Dwyer, who was colvlared on the line. From the ensuing scrum Richardson sent to Ingram, who raced across. Timmins (ust failed with the kick. Bulls 3, Hunterville 0. Only five minutes remained till half-time, and Hunterville had rather the better of play until the teams changed over. McKenzie, speculating, let Hunterville through. Dwyer stopping tho rush temporarily, and McKenzie eventually forcing A penalty to Hunterville saw Shanley find the uprights with a neat kick. — Hunterville 3, Bulls 3. Play now became exciting. Lunn intercepted, ran, and passed to Ingram, who outpaced the opposition to score his second try in the corner. Jack Timmins converted with a great kick. —Bulls 8, Huntervillo 3. A long kick by McKenzie saw his vis-a-vis smothered, but an illegal tackle, for which a penalty was awarded, gave the visitors relief Tho red forwards carried on, and Rowe, with a long kick to Bulls lino put Hunterville on the attack. The ball bounced awkwardly for McKenzie, but he saved cleverly. Hunterville backs ret up a pretty passing rush, but Duncan was held up on the lino, and Dwyer saved with a handy kick. Offside play gave Shanley another kick, and he found tho posts fnoin a distance of 35 yards.—Hunterville 6, Bulls 8. In play again, and the visitors backs set up an attack. Haywood hung on too long, and a certain score was lost. From a scrum on Bulls line the ball travelled to Symons, who crossed. Baker failed with the kick. Hunterville 9, Bulls 8. The Bulls players were now tiring, and Hunterville forwards took charge. McIntyre broke through and ran strongly before transferring to Lourie. who scored. No goal resulted. —Hunterville 12, Bulls 8. In the dying stages of the game Bulls tried hard to turn the tables, but the attacks were not sustained, and play was in midfield when the final whistle sounded. Mr D. Howard was the referee.
