PAHIATUA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PAHIATUA, April 7. The Alayor (Air J. D. Wilson) presided over tho usual monthly meeting of tho Pahiatua Borough Council held this evening. Also present wero Crs. Ross, Tulloch, Donald, Brown, Britland, Boagcy, Murphy, Davidson, and Alurch. A communication was received from tho iUnsterton County Council asking for a return of heavy traffic fees collected by tho Pahiatua Borough Council. The Mayor, in stating that the return had been provided, mentioned that under the present allocation the borough received 2s 5d and tho county council 3s scl of thp Tees collected, which he thought was unfair to tho borough. Tho town clerk was instructed to write to the Alasterton County Council and ascertain tho duration of tho present allocation. The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote asking the council to tender for the cost of tarring the drive iri the Hospital grounds with two coats of tar. It was decided to forward an estimate. Mr H, D. Grocott, of Wellington, wrote forwarding a Union Jack which ho would be pleased if tho council would receive as a token for file many kindnesses ho had received while a resident of Pahiatua. The gift was accepted with pleasure and a hearty vote of thanks passed to the donor. The Pahiatua County Council wrote asking that all applicants for a motor driver’s license should be examined before the licenses wore issued and, further, that the Borough Council should only issue licenses to residents within the borough. Alention was mado that in tho past licenses had been Issued without tho applicants being put

through a test. The Alayor pointed out that in view of tho many accidents caused by motors it was ossential that all motorists requiring licenses should undergo a test. It was decided to refer tho whole rnattor to a special committee. The secretary of the Bush Union Hockey Association wrole asking for the use of tho Recreation Ground for a wholo day tournament on the 30th inst., and that necessary repairs be elfcctod to the dressing sheds. — Referred to the Recreation Committee with power to act. It was reported that two swinging lamps had been installed in the Garden Squaro for the use of the band and that tho lights were proving satisfactory. The works committee reported that the estimated oost of erecting reinforced concreto curbing round tho Square Garden was £l2 10s a chain. The matter of declaring certain arena in the borough parking areas was referred to tho works committee. The borough ranger reported that he had impounded nine head of cattle and sjx horses during tho month ended March 31. Building permits amounting to £1215 were granted. Tho treasurer's report showed that the council had a credit balance of £1426 lfe 5d on April 1, 1930, with £l7B 6s 8d outstanding for current rates. In speaking to tho report tho Alayor stated that the borough finances wero in a healthy condition and mentioned that tho only charge for overdraft interest during tho year was Is. He thought that tho treasurer (Mr L. D. Lovelock) was to bo congratulated on producing what practically amounted to- a balance-sheet for the year so soon after Alarch 31, 1930. With reference to tho commissioner’s report on the Pahiatua-Pongaron, Road Commission wherein the coats of the Pahiatua Borough Council wero to bo borno by tho Akitio County, it was docided to inform that body that the Tahiatua Borough Council would not make any claim for expenses. Tho matter of a clean-up day was left to the works committee with power to act. The usual monthly meeting of tho Pahiatua County Council was held on Saturday, Gr Bolton presiding. Also present wore Cre Hodgins, Bissct, Cornelius, Bryant, Champion, Whitta and Mason. An apology for absence was recoived from Cr Fouhy. Correspondence was received from the Public Works Department relative to tho condition of No. 15 main highway which was stated to bo in a dangerous condition owing to an cxccbs of metal on tho road. It was pointed out that the long spell of dry weather during tho last two months had produced what appeared to bo an excessively heavy coat of metal. Now that a traffic inspector had been appointed it was pointed out that thoso requiring motor-driver's licenses would probably go to the town clerk who did not carry out a test. It was decided to approach the Borough Council in order to come to some agreement on the matter. Air and Mrs C. H. Arrow and Aliss Lee Arrow have returnod to Pahiatua after k holiday Spent in Wanganui.
