GLEN OROUA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) GLEN OROUA, April 7. An unfortunate accident occurred at the school on Thursday morning, when Edmund Nolan, tho younger son of Air and Mrs J. F. Nolan, sustained a severo fracture of tho left thigh. Edmund and another pupil were playing “horses,” the former being tho driver, when by some means the strings used were caught round his leg. Tho other pupil was urged to proceed und tho sudden pull throw Edmund to the ground and probably dragged him a short distance with tho result statod above. First aid was rendered by the teachers, and the little sufferer waj removed to a private hospital in Palmereton North as soon as possible. A short time ago tho head teacher of the local school applied' to the secretary of tho Horbert Smith Trust Fund, Hamilton, for two trophies for competition in connection with tha local school's annual swiming sports. Advice has been recoived from tho secretary stating that two silver cups have been awarded for the boys’ and girls’ handicap events, and that those would bo forwarded in the courso of a few days. The trophies should do a great deal to stimulate further interest in swimming, which is already a successful feature of the school. At present thore are 26 pupils who aro able to swim, and this season 12 have qualified for learners' certificates (50 yds), two for 220yds, six for 440yds (thoso two distances qualifying for proficiency certificates). Two pupils already hold morit certificates (880yds) and two hold proficiency certificates. The two youngest pupils to learn to swim are Enid Gimblett (primer 4) and Jeanette Scott (Standard 1), the latter having qualified for a learners’ certificate. The swimming certificates are issued by the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, Christchurch. Walker (Rangiotu) and R. Prebble. Air and Airs H. A. Prebblo kindly placed their private court at the disposal of the players, and by this moans tho whole match was played right out. This would have been impossible on the one court possessed by the local club. The following aro the results of the various games, Glen Oroua' playors being mentioned first in each case:—
