WHIPPET NOTES

Mr Eddie Johansen possesses a fine pup by Sandy out of Nanette. Something good is expected of this youngster. , Remind, Mr E. S. Ramington’s stud dog, strained a muscle on the track recently and is having a spell. The same owner’s Glen Fern and her dam, Glen Belle, are racing very consistently at present. The following dogs will probably run well at the Sportsground on Wednesday, 9th inst:— Graham Hurdles—Glen Belle, Miss Australia, Humour. Autumn Handicap.—Katinka, Giggles, Sanette. April Hurdles). —Starlight, Kiltie, Domino. Georgi Cup.—Katinka, D.C.L., Verowyne. Supporters of the sport will be sorry to hear that Mr E. Y. Musson’s whippet puppy Bonny Star, by Lone Star, from the Australian bitch Bonny Jean, had a severe accident when as the result of a collision with another dog she fractured her off hind leg close to the hip joint. She is at present receiving veterinary attention and whilst such a serious accident is almost certain to tell against her as a racing proposition, Mr Musson hopes that the results will not be too detrimental for her to be used on the track. The Southland whippet fancy suffered a sad loss when Mr F. Collier’s fine bitch. Rose Comedy, died as the result of whelping troubles. This bitch has for some years been the most prominent competitor on the Invercargill race-track and had won over twenty races off the scratch mark. Although especially good over the hurdles, sne has also won several races on the flat, her last successes being scored at the Invercargill Club’s summer meeting where she was first in the Brush Steeplechase and second in the Summer Cup. She had been mated to Mr Barton Hobbs’s young cup winner, Tasman Flight. •Mr W. Crossan, of Dunedin, has sent his whippet bitch Peppercorn on a visit to Mr A. Musson’s well-known winning dog Lone Star. As Peppercorn in a previous litter produced the Derby winner, Captain Tasman, great things are hoped from this mating. Whether or not a dog contracts distemper depends very largely on the state of its health. If it is below par and its powers of resistance reduced, then our canine pal is a fitting host for the distemper germ. The finest antidote for the complaint is prevention, in other words, the keeping of a dog’s physique up to concert pitch. Should distemper be diagnosed on no account put trust in quack remedies. It is quite impossible for any one medicine to cure an ailment such as distemper, which is remarkable for its multiplicity. Mrs F. E. Biltcliff, of Riccarton, reports that her brindle Whippet bitch Firefly has been mated to Mr Stan. Biltcliff’s young winning dog Hermes. Firefly is a daughter of that sterling racer Miss Ruby, and Prince Fly 2’rinco Comedy—Flyaway), while ermes is by Captain Comedy from the English bitch Jenny. Mr ,It. Cousins’s Sanette is racing well, and with a little experience will win shortly. MEETING AT PETONE.
