CONVICTION FOR THEFT.

OFFENCE BY YOUTH. PUBLICITY AS PENALTY. “That will be your punishment for stealing from a car,” observed' Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, when he refused an order for the suppression of the name of Itoy Caulton, alias “Snowy” Caulton, alias Smith, following his conviction for theft. Accused, who is aged 19, was charged with the theft on April 24, 1928, at Palmerston North, of an overcoat valued at £B, the property of Donald Amodeo. Senior-Detective Quirke stated that accused had taken the coat from the owner’s car. Some months later it had been recovered from a friend to whom accused had either given or lent it. Accused had been working for some months in Palmerston North and had been behaving himself. Nothing previously was known against him. “I am giving you a chance,. so go back to work,” was the admonition of the magistrate to accused as he commented that he thought it would be safe to admit accused to probation, for twelve months.
