AMATEUR ATHLETICS

WELLINGTON CHAMPIONSHIPS. STRANGE SECOND IN SPRINT EVENTS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Feb. 23. The Wellington provincial amateur athletic championships were held on Saturday, afternoon at Petone under weather conditions which were for the most part .favourable. No records were brokon other than in the discus event, in which P. Munro, of Wellington. broke his own Australian and New Zealand record of 137 feet, which has been standing since 1924. On Saturday Munro stretched it out to 139 feet 2 inches, which was measured in accordance with record conditions. Considerable interest attached to the appearances of J. W. Savidan, of Auckland, the present holder qf the New Zealand titles for one and three miles, as well as the national cross country championship. Although beaten in the mile, Savidan strolled home an easy winner in the three mile event. His time for -the mile was 4 min 28see, and for tho three miles, 14 min 59sec.

In the mile event, Randolph Rose, the well-known runner, took part. Ho has been training carefully for some time past and will meet Lermond here next Saturday at the Basin Reserve. Golding (Australia) won tho 440 yards event easily, with McLachlan in second place. In a one mile relay the competitors were six local clubs teams and an international team (Barnes, Lermond, Golding and Brownlie). The event" was won by Leith Club, with Anglican second.
