KAIRANGA COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL'. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Kairanga County Council was held this morning, Cr. Batchelar presiding. Also present were Crs. Voss, Small, Collis, Cheetham, Anderson, Moody and Hopcroft. An apology for absence was received from Cr. Mercer. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The following report was submitted by the county engineer (Mr J. E. Menzies): —Thirty day men have been employed and eight contracts are in hand. The Main Highway Board estimates have been prepared and forwarded to Wellington. Thirty-six chains of base course were put down on Rangitikei Line, making the total length 214 chains. This leaves about 66 chains yet to complete the work. Widening the sides of the formation has been delayed by wet weather and it is very doubtful if much more of this work can be done this season. Extra widening is also required for a short distance near the Awahuri bridge. In the Taonui riding a very large quantity of maintenance gravel has been put out on Foxaon Lino. The flood water did some damage to portions of this road, but it is now in fair order, but some more grading and gravel are required. Hamilton’s Line has also been repaired. Metal is being carted out to Ivairanga-Bunny-tliorpe Road and, if possible, both big trucks will bo put on this work. It this cannot be arranged, it will be necessary to hire a truck to assist our own, so that the roller can be kept fully employed. Portion of Awapuni bridge is now open for traffic and the approaches have been formed and gravelled. The decking has been removed from the old bridge and only sufficient stringers left to provide a platform for the pile driving derrick. The excavations for abutments aro also completed ready for the pile driving. The grading has been done on a number of roads. In the Mangaone riding the contractors for tho Derby Creek bridge have been advised that some work is necessary before tlie final payment can be made. This work should bo completed within a few days and the bridge can then bo opened for traffic. The motor grader has been over the greater portion of the riding. To Matai Road is now being repaired and general maintenance work has been done on several roads. The widening on Henderson’s Line is now carry out the formation and metalling on Robert’s Line extension as soon as possible and to leave ICairanga-Bunny-thorpo ltoad till the former grading is done. In the Fitzherbert Riding a new concrete culvert is now being put in on Fitzherbert East ltoad to replace a pipe culvert which was too small to carry the flood water. General maintenance work has been carried out on the Aokautere roads. The road line near Bryant’s bridge will be defined to see if it is possible to improve the corner there without going off the road reserve. Lynch’s bridge is now open to traffic; the temporary bridge has been removed and all fences put back on the correct line. A large quantity of gravel has been put on the main highway and this road has been graded as often as possible.—Adopted. The following property transfers were approved: —Mangaone riding: J. Smith to W. McSavney; T. McAvinue to H. L. Maul; S. Macaulay to C. H. /Thompson; estate of S. R. Lancaster to A. E. Cowley; S. Rahbitts to G. Hastelon; I. M. Hughes to P. Do Vantier. Fitzherbert riding: E. L. Smith to P. T. Jamieson. GENERAL. A complaint was received from the Manawatu Reliance Co-operative Dairy Coy., Ltd., to the effect that both motor cars and lorries passed the factory at speeds which were considered dangerous to suppliers coming in and out of the factory, while, at the same time, being dangerous to pedestrian traffic, particularly children who used the road. —As the road is not in the Kairanga County, it was decided to point out the position to the Manawatu Automobile Association. Advice was received from the Main Highways Board regretting that a £3 for £1 subsidy on the Greatford-Wood-ville via Feilding and Ashhurst main highway could not be approved, as the programme of surfacing radial roads was drawn up on the basis of the estimated amount of money available for the next five years, and the board was unable to extend the programme. The same position applied to the council’s request for a £3 for £1 subsidy for the tar-sealing of the Levin-Palmerston North via Shannon main highway. The district health inspector reported that, during the month, there had been two cases of scarlet fever in the county and three cases of pneumonia, while 25 inspections had been made of various premises. The county rangers reported that a total of 73 head of cattle had been impounded during the month.
