PRINCE MISSED DEATH. CAR BLOWN TO ATOMS. The Prince of Wales escaped, by the narrowest possible margin, being blown to pieces during the war. He had left his car in comparative shelter beside a wall, and a few seconds before he returned both the wall and the car were blown to atoms by a shell. The Prince was horrified as he gazed at the scene, and realised that if the shell had arrived a few seconds later he must have been killed. This story is related for the first time by Edwin T. Woodhall in bis book “Detective and Secret Service Days.” He was the Prince’s guardian during a visit to the battlefields, and the startling incident he records occurred, he says in the very heart of a shell-blasted region.
