ST. ANDREW’S TOURNAMENT. THISTLE BEAT ISLAND BAY. The first semi-final in the St. Andrew’s association football tournament was played this morning, resulting in a win tor Thistle at Island Bay s expense. The winners played better football than their opponents who, however, held their own in the first spell. They played themselves out and after the change-over Thistle dominated the with the advantage of a stiff breeze were the first to move to the attack -and they hammered away for some time till from loose play Lothian put in a beautiful shot from about thirty yards out, the ball just dropping under the bar. Island Bay then mado a determined attack and forced their opponents to concede a corner. Another hot attack by the Bay saw a forward send in a hot shot which just cleared the bar. Thistle drove them back again, but could not score, a beautiful header by Lothian hitting the cross-bar. Island Bay made some spirited raids, but could not quite finish them ofi and half-time sounded with Thistle holding a goal advantage. Thistle set off with renewed vigour after the interval, but offside pulled them up. Nice combined work nearly saw them in again, but Lothian’s header just missed. Not to be denied, they came again and Lothian went right through the Bay defence to score the Scots’ second goal. Island Bay rallied and were conceded a corner. Thistle made sure of their victory when Lothian crossed to Cameron who drove the ball hard into the net. Island Bay made a strong effort and were awarded a penalty foj- a foul, but Kirkland made a good save, leaving Thistle winners by three goals to ml. Mr McSheffery refereed.
