FEILDING NEWS

TENNIS 1 . (Special to “Standard.”) ' FEILDING, March 28. The final of the Feilding Lawn Tennis Club’s B grade singles championship was played on Tuesday evening when L. Boddy beat H. Amos, 6 —4, 6—2. The result of this match places, by a- curious coincidence, the four championship honours of tho club in two homes, the Boddv . Bros having won tho men’s A and B grade singles championship, while Misses M. and N. Rutherford performed a similar feat in the ladies’ championship games. CRICKET. So far the only match that will be played in Feilding on Saturday is a junior representative game between the local colts and a team from Wanganui. Efforts to arrange a match with McGirr’s eleven had net proved successful owing to a suitable date not being available and the Horowhenua Association could not get a team together for this week. Yesterday a telegram was sent to the Dannevirke Ascsociation in an endeavour to arrange a game, but up to present nothing definite has resulted.. AN OLD COIN. A very old coin, bearing +he date of 1826, was unearthed by Mr J. C. Webster, of Beattie Street, while digging in his garden. The coin, which was minted in the reign of George IV, is id in value but much larger than the farthings that are at present sometimes seen. Being 103 years old, the presence of such a coin in Feilding is interesting, but probably it was dropped by some of the early settlers when the town was being hewn out of the bush. BOWLING. A rink consisting of Simpson, Miles, Brewer and Ingram (skip) from the Oroua Bowling Club journeyed to Ekatahuna yesterday afternoon and were successful in winning the Dixon Cup from a home rink by 23 points to 14. i THE MAYORALTY. Questioned this morning as to his intentions regarding the Mayoralty, Mr E. Fair stated that he had decided not to again accept office. He found that the dual ties of private and municipal business were more than he could satisfactorily manage, and, with the increasing demands that local body work was making on his time, he reluctantly felt obliged to hand over the office of Mayor to another person.
