FOXTON NOTES

DAMAGE BY FLOODS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Nov. 6. On Sunday Mr W. E. Barbor (chairman of the Manawatu County Council) accompanied by Mr J. Linklater, visited tho Moutoa and inspected tho damage done by tho flood from this side of tho river. Tho pressure had broken the banks at soveral points, ono of the worst breaks being at tho back of Mr Nowth’s property. Tho road has also been badly scoured in places. The completion of the Makerua banking diverts the flood waters to the Moutoa area and unless sonic comprehensive scheme is decided upon a very large area will bo inundated at normal flood time. Recurring floods will strain the financial resources of both tho Manawatu County Council and tho Moutoa Drainage Board and for this reason some form of,relief is sought from the Government. SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Foxton District High School Committee was held on Monday ovening, presided ovor by Mr J. K. Hornblow (chairman). The Borough Council wrote acquainting tho committee of the board’s request to have the water charge at the school remitted and asking whether the committee was sympathetic with the application. The chairman said that the payment of the water charge was a drain on the capitation-grant and m other centres tho local bodies did not make a charge for water supplied to schools. Prior to the water and drainage system the Borough Council reduced the sanitation charge to half rates. It was decided to advise the council that the committee endorses tho board’s request. It was decided to ask the board to refund tho amount expended on the western boundary fenoe. A report was submitted in connection with the work carried out on tho old school residence sito in preparing; same fbr agricultural purposes. Tho chairman and secretary were appointed visitors for the month.
