FEILDING NEWS

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, Oot. 30. The annual meeting of the Feilding Chamber of Commerce was hold last night, Air P. B. Desmond presiding over a fair attendance of members. In moving the adoption of tho report and balance-sheet (already published) the chairman reviewed the progress the. exports of the Dominion had made during the last twelve months and expressed tho opinion that the wave of prosperity the country was enjoying would not prove short-lived. The indications wore that tho prices for wool, meat and butter would remain stable, and tho largo increase in the prices now ruling for New Zealand meat pointed to the fact that the export trade in this direction was in a state of revival. As regards butter, the speaker quoted statistics to show that there was a growing demand for our dairy produce on- the Continent, and this would necessarily result in keener competition for New Zealand produce., Air Desmond also referred to tho change that had taken place in the country during the year in regard to the banking returns, and he ventured to say that the signs of progress and prosperity that were evident showed that there was a decided trend toward thrift on the part of the people' of the Dominion.

Air V. E. Smifh seconded the motion, and Air A. J. Kellow also expressed his appreciation of tho chairman’s address and briefly referred to a. few matters in the annual report, among them being that of closer settlement which the speaker thought would be of great benefit to Feilding. He thought that this matter should bo pushed ahead at once and also the question of tho representation of Palmerston North on the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board. Air A. E. Sandford mentioned his pleasure at tho chairman’s address and deprecated the fact that there was such a small attendance of members at tho meeting. He advocated the securing of a capable speaker to give an address at each annual meeting as a means of sustaining interest in the chamber. The motion was carried without further discussion. With a few . minor details it was decided to make it the same as last year. The sum of £SO was voted to-, ward the cost of painting and repairing the club’s buildings. , _ ... Mr E. H.
