AMERICAN STEAMERS.
ATLANTIC AND PACIFIC TRADE. (Australian Press Association). NEW YORK, Oct. 27. The New York American’s Washington correspondent states that under the recently-passed White Merchant .Marine Bill—tho Government will advance three-quarters of the construction costs f new merchant vessels —the United States Shipping Board has arranged with private American interests fori building in American shipyards 34 modern steamers for the trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific passenger arid freight trade.. The vessels will range from 12,000 to 30,000 tons, have a speed of 14 to 30 knots, and will be equipped with Diesel engines. Further details of the enterprise are being kept secret.
