TASMAN FLIERS
HONOUR OF NEW ZEALAND. WIDOWS LEFT BEHIND. MAYOR OF WELLINGTON’S PROPOSAL. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 20. The Mayor, Mr Troup, has invited a meeting of citizens for Tuesday evening with a view to discussing the position with regard to the widows of Lieutenant Moncrieff and Captain Hood and a decision as to the action to be taken. Their attempt to cross tiro Tasman Mr Troup points out stirred the imagination of nil Now Zealanders. They sought to place New Zealand first, and had no desire for personal gain. Apart altogether from the criticism as to the completeness of the preparations or otherwise for the flight, none would deny that theso were two brave men who essayed a great task for the honour of New Zealand. All men who attempted great things took risks, and should the time ever come when our young men refused to take risks then romanco would have gono out of life. The proposal is to set a fund afoot.
ENDURANCE FLIGHT
COLD AND LOSS OF SLEEP,
Received January 20, 1.0 p.m. SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 19. Upon landing Captain Kingst’orcl Smith and Lieutenant Pond were deafened by the drone of the motors and were unable to hear the shouts of the onlookers. They said that they know at two o’clock in the morning that they would bo unable to break the record. The petrol consumption had been far greater than they had estimated. They suffered much from cold and loss of sleep, but decided to remain in the air as long as possible. They blamed the failure of the flight wholly to tho cold, which forced them to speed the motors to obtain warmth. Accordingly the petrol consumption was increased. —A. and N.Z. cable.
