EMPIRE WEALTH.

MINERALS AND OILS

PROJECTED SURVEY WELCOMED

RUGBY, Aug. 12. An announcement that the Australian Government and the Empire Marketing Board have agreed jointly to bear the expense of making field trials of new geophysical methods for the survey of minerals and oil throughout the Empire is welcomed by the newspapers. In connection with the projected survey attention is called to a proposal which Sir Thomas Holland will lay before the Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress, which opens it second triennial meeting in Canada towards the end of this month. Holland proposes that the congress, which includes among its constituent bodies institutions representing Canada, Australia, South Africa, and India, shall appoint committees of specialists to undertake a review of tho mineral resources and smelting capabilities of each of tire Dominions and larger colonies. The Times says: “Essential data aro necessary for tho formulation of an economic policy as well as the insurance of military safety. Should Holland’s proposal bo carried into effect, geophysical methods which are to be tested by tlie Australian Government and tho Empire Marketing Board should, if practical experience confirms their utility, prove valuable adjuncts to the work. —British official wireless.
