NORTHERN SUCCESSES. RECAPTURE OF NANKING CERTAIN. SHANGHAI, Aug. 14. Sweeping successes by the Northern forces on all fronts are reported. The Nationalist casualties in the recent fighting are estimated at 31,000, and tho Northern forces 6000. General Chang Chung Chang, the Shantung war lord, is assisting General Sun Chuan Fang, erstwhile ruler of the five south-eastern provinces, in his drive toward Pukow, the fall of which is expected momentarily. Panic-seized Nanking nativos are fleeing to Shanghai by railway, also all classes of rivercraft. Tho natives declare that t.lie recapture of Nanking by the Northerners is certain. They expect the city to be looted by the retreating Southern troops. General Chiang Kai-shek arrived and conferred with tho Nationalist Minister of Finance regarding the situation. AFFILIATION WITH HANKOW.

Received .August 15. 9.25 a.m. MELBOURNE, Aug. 15. The Australasian Trades Union Council executive resolved to affiliate with the Hankow Labour Conference held in May last. The council postponed decision for the time being on the question of affiliation with Moscow or Holland.—Press Association.
