Captain Steel©, of the local Defence Department has received notice of his transfer to Wellington.

The Dean of Nelson has recovered sufficiently from his serious operation to be able to return to his home. He intends to spend a holiday in Wellington before resuming his duties.

A London cablegram states that the Duke and Duchess of York will attend an evening party given by Sir Joseph and Lady Cook at Australia House on Tuesday. Captain W. B. McKay, an ex-Clinton and Balclutha High School boy, has been appointed officer commanding South African Engineer Corps, Roberts Heights, - Transvaal. Mr R. White, son of Mr C. W. White, of Church street, who has been seriously ill with rheumatic fever, is, his friends will be pleased to learn, making favourable progress and is now out of danger.

A cable- message reports that the Bishop of London will leave on Thursday on a tour of the world. The Bishop announced that he would bo in Australia and New Zealand from February 5 until April 4. He was anxious to see the work of the Church of England Council of Empire settlements. News has been received by cable from Central Africa of the death of Mr Dan Crawford, the eminent missionary. Over 40 years ago, he left Scotland to follow up the work of Livingstone, and he began where the latter left off. For thirty y.ears, Mr Crawford never left Central Africa, but about ten years • ago, he toured the world, telling the story of his travels and missionary labours. On that tour he came to New Zealand, and lectured in the prominent cities of the Dominion. Mr Crawford was regarded as one of the greatest Greek testament scholars in the world, and was a man of considerable independence and force of character.

A pleasant social function was arranged at Foxton on Friday evening to bid farewell to the Presbyterian minister, Rev. F. McDonald, and Mrs McDonald. Mr McDonald, who was unable to be present at the gathering owing to indisposition, has accepted a call' to Pahiatua. The Mayor, Mr M. E. Perreau, presided and referred to the splendid work Mr and Mrs McDonald had accomplished during their stay in Foxton and, in appropriate terms, sincerely regretted their departure. Mr J. K. Hornblow, senior elder of the church, spoke of Mr McDonald’s ability as a preacher and the Revs. S. Perryman (Methodist), W. H. Walton (Church of England), Captain Stone (Salvation Army), Mr Kingston (New Zealand Alliance) and Mr R. MeMurray, on behalf of the church managers, added their tributes. On behalf of the congregation Mr John Ross presented Mr McDonald with an aneroid barometer;', while Mrs Ross, secretary of the Ladies’ Guild, presented Mrs McDonald with a tortoise shell-backed mirror. Mrs McDonald was also the recipient of presentations from the Bible class—a tall vase and jar of toilet salts—and a sweets dish from the “Keep on Smiling Club.’’— Foxton correspondent.
