FUN IN THE COMMONS

ELEPHANTS AND ELANDS. INCONCLUSIVE EXPERIMENTS. LONDON, June 16. The House of Commons enjoyed some, respite from its coal worries, in Sir Gerald Strickland’s strange question whether, in view of the rediscovery by Belgium of the possibility of utilising the African elephant, ..and in view of the effort to breed elands in Western Australia, the Government would refer the utilisation of thesei animals in the Dominions to the committee dealing with the-exploitation of whales. The question provoked roars of laughter. Air Amery _ (Secretary for the Dominions) replied that the experiments in the Congo were still inconclusive, and he doubted if the committee dealing with whales was the suitable one to take ovor the animalg mentioned. Mr Basil Peto asked: Will the Minister also consider the utilisation of the zoo’s white elephant? . Sir’Harry Brittain: And that virile quadruped, the Maltese terrier. Mr Amery just smiled and sat down.
