WHITE AUSTRALIA.

OPPOSITION TO POLICY. AT MIGRATION CONGRESS. LONDON, June 22. A dead set against the White Australia policy was sensed by Messrs Evatt and Kitson, representing Australia at the World Labour Migration Congress, which opened to-day. They informed the Australian Press Association this was, perhaps, to be expected from a congress in which only five English-speaking countries —Britain, Australia, 'New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa—were represented against 17 European and Asiatic countries, including India, whose representatives were all Indians. Mr W. Wilson represented New Zealand, and the United States was not represented. The British representatives included Messrs MacDonald, Henderson, Lansbury and Cramp. Mr Evatt illustrated the deliberate attack on the White Australia policy by quoting the independent Labour Party’s proposal, sponsored by Messrs Jowett and Kirkwood, that “migrants should not be excluded purely on the grounds of race and colour.” Other proposals emanating from other Europeans and Asiatic bodies implicity, if not explicitly, betrayed a similar hostility to “White Australia.” Messrs Evatt and Kitson stated that they were determined to fight these proposals to the last ditch, and also other sinister proposals from Europeans designed to create an international authority to over-ride nationals, such as the Dominions’ trades and labour organisations. —A. and N.Z. cable.
