Per Press Association
NELSON, April G. Tho Kirkpatrick Masonic institute (formerly the residence of the lato Mr S. Kirkpatrick) was officially opened by R.W. Bro. Jesse Steer, district Grand Master of Westland and Nelson (E.C.), chairman of tho board of governors, in the presence of a large and representative attendance of tne Masonic fraternity. Mr Steer explained that the homo was, by the terms expressed in the will of their esteemed Brother, Samuel- Kirkpatrick, to bo founded on similar lines to tho Royal Masonic Institute for Girls in England. “Tho Masonic Society,” stated tho speaker, “is not a friendly society, benevolent or charitable institution, but it unfortunately happens, through circumstances over which we have no control, that a long illness and death leaves the children fatherless or in more or less precarious and destitute circumstances. Bro. Kirkpatrick, realising this, and with the liberal hospitality which lias characterised his actions to those dependent upon him and thoso in h;s employ, has left the residue of his estate, approximately £50,000, together with this beautiful homo with its pleasant surroundings, for the housing and education of girls left in this unfortunate position.”
