NAPIER v. PALMERSTON. VISITORS GOOD STAND. . HARDAKER REGISTERS CENTURY. A two days’ cricket match between the. Napier Technical Old Boys and a team of colts drawn from local clubs was entered upon, at the Sportsground on Saturday morning, the visiting combination taking first strike. A big hitting innings by Hardaker materially assisted Napier to return the good figures of 254, tho aforementioned batsman being responsible for 113 of the number. The visitors were at the wickets throughout tho morning and it was not till the afternoon was w r ell advanced that tho home team took their turn at the batting crease. Thoir opening was not auspicious for T. Young was sent back with the score standing at seven, while his opening partner, Rose, followed him to the pavilion one run later. Pilcher and Webster were instrumental in carrying the total to 23 before the former fell a victim to Rouse, one of Hawke’s Bay’s prominent trundlers, while seven runs later Webster likewise succumbed to the same bowler, who was putting a lot of work on tho ball. Matters improved with Hollier and McHaffie becoming associated, but a change in tho attack tempted Hollier to his undoing for, in attempting to lift a slow break ball from E. Eliott to the boundary line, he was taken well out. He had compiled 24 of the total of G 6. The two High School batsmen, McHaffio and Spring, then entered upon a profitable partnership, the call of time finding them still at the wickets with the telegraph reading 118 for the loss of five wickets, McHaffie having 28 to his credit and Spring one run in excess of that figure.
