COUNTRY NEWS.
SHANNON. (From Our Own Correspondent.} The following were the winners in various competitions in connection with the recent carnival :--Farmers, two cannisters of tea, Mr Sorensen, Levin; case of knives, H. Wiggins; jaclfet, Nancy Easton;' cake, N. Butt; watch, J. McKenzie, Moutoa; wood, Mr Cheeseman; football, E. J. Wills, Palmerston North; ham, Mrs Spring. Town, hamper, R. McConville;, firewood, A. Birchill; nightdress, Mrs J. Spencer; pink woollies,, Mary Butler, bed, Mrs J. Hodge; doll, Mrs Thwaites. The votes received by tho baby candidates were as follow: Farmers’ baby, Barbara Saxon, 8278; Town baby, lan Hudson, 4476; Mangahao baby, Eddie Matthews, 4404. The attendants of the three candidates in the crowning ceremony on Wednesday were: Farmers, Mary Saxon, Joan Webb (pink and blue); Town, Billie Brown and Jill Hudson (mauve and gold); Mangahao, Rita Easton and Joey Terry (Red Cross nurses).
TOKOMARU. - (From Our Own Correspondent.) The school children had the pleasure last week of saluting the new flag purchased for the school. / Mrs R. Barber and Miss Reichel returned home from Wellington during last week. Mr and Mrs S. J. Castle left for Rotorua and Auckland on the Saturday morning express. Mrs and Miss Perry and Miss Morglan leave for Rotorua to-day. Miss Morglan, of Sydney, is greatly impressed with New Zealaud.
