ANNIVERSARY DAY

SUDDEN CHANGE IN WEATHER. EASTERLY GALE AND RAIN. Despite threatening weather conditions early this morning all motor and railway transit facilities to the various fixtures arranged for, and to seaside resorts, were most liberally patronised. , What weather conditions the excursionists met with later in the day was not known at the time of this edition going to press, but, as far as Palmerston North itself was concerned, the holiday was completely spoiled by intermittent showers and a howling easterly wind, although early in the afternoon there was every promise of. a change, there being a break in the sky towards the coast. The Foxton road early in tho day carried a great volume of motor traffic composed mostly of vehicles, bound either for tho races or tho beach, while tho special trains wero well filled.

Likewise, there" was a large number bound for Ashhurst to witness tho motor sports, road and rail both carrying a very considerable volume of traffic in that direction. additional reason for tho crowd at Ashhurst was tho holding of the Methodist picnic at tho Domain there.

Early this morning those attending tho wood and coal merchants’ picnic left for Foxton by motor lorries, while later in the day about 150 persons left for the Danish picnic on tho other side of the Fitzherbert bridge, where during the showers of the forenoon they sheltered in tents. A cricket match was played locally between the Railway Clubs of Palmerston North and Wellington, while two local cricket teams played away—the seniors at Dannevirke and the juniors at Wanganui.
