CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The monthly mooting of the Shannon Chamber of C'ommerco was field on Wednesday evening. "Present: Messrs Hyde (chairman), Speirs, Mitchell, Tippler, Moody and Thwaites (secretary). The chairman gave a report of the meeting at Koputauroa regarding the Koputaroa-Buckley-Shannon road. The final resolution at that meeting was for a deputation to bo sent to the Minister of Public Works asking tor a Government grant towards the road. The matter of appointing a representative was left over to a later meeting. In the meantime. The secretary was directed to write tlio chairman of No. 9 District Main Highways Board, advising that tlio “Chamber is strongly in favour of the proposal to alter the route of the mam highway between Lovin and Shannon, so as to eliminate tho hills, and considers tlio proper routo is via tho level road along the railway lino. It is tho general opinion in the district that a serious mistako has been made in bringing the main highway over the hills. We would respectfully suggest that the board send its engineer to inspect the alternative level routo.” With regard to tho chamber’s request that passengers bo booked at Shannon by tho south-bound Auckland oxpress, which stops at Shannon to effect a crossing with the north daylight Limited, the district traffic manager pointed out that tho daylight Limited were on trial and a decision would be come to early in tho New Year as to whether or not they would be permanently established. At the present juncture the department regretted that no alteration could bo made to the present arrangements. The New Zealand Employers’ Federation wrote with reference to the motor omnibus regulations and it was resolved to protest against the proposed regulations. It was decided to write to the Postmaster asking for the installing of slot telephone machines; also a stamp vending machine.

Tho peoples’ picnic committee, under tho auspices of tho Chamber of Commerce, will hold a meeting this week to consider tho balance-sheet of • tho last picnic also suggestions for next picnio. . A meeting of the Bowling Club committee was held this week when it was resolved to hold in a fortnight a two evening electric light rink tournament. On the first evening four games of 11 heads each will be played and tho ties and finals on the second night. Entries are to bo invited from all outside clubs. Mr C. Jennings has left for the ' exhibition and expects to be absont for two weeks.
