MOTION OF EARTH

v .. . ;. ..... MEASURED BY SCIENTIST. CLAIM BY AMERICAN. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received December 30, 9.30 a.m. NEW YORK, Dec. 30. At Kansas Cijy, Missouri, Dr Dayton Miller, president of the American Physics Society, read a paper before the convention of the American Association for the Advancement of Science which, in tho opinion of scientists, struck a blow at tho foundations of tho Einstein theory of relativity. Dr Miller has-been working at tho top of Mt. Wilson, California-to detect the motion of the earth and the solar system through tho ether of space. Professor Einstein claimed that it was impossible to detect such motion, and based his relativity theory largely upon that fact, but Dr Miller said : “I succeeded in measuring the motion of the earth and the solar system in the ether of space. My work annuls the second postulate of tho Einstein theory.” Dr Miller also declared that hi\had succeeded in measurin :-,.ae diyfLkkm and size:, of this motion. He £ _ ’fed that the speed of the solar system «Vas ton times as great as lve had previously thought. He said: “The sun moves through space at the speed of 120 miles per second, carrying the earth and the other planets at a similar rate, while the direction is close to the star Vega.” Dr Miller made 1000 observations before declaring Jhe result. —A. and N.Z. cable.
