TOKOMARU NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) On Saturday afternoon the “cherio” held in aid of the bazaar funds, despite the showery weather, proved an attraction for over 30 children und a fair.number of adults. Games were indulged in in the early part of the afternoon; also various competitions were arranged by Messrs Ella, Rizzi and S. Parr. Great amusement was caused by a bun-eating competition, and a wheelbarrow race. A nail-driving competition was won by Mrs A. Todd, who received a salad bowl. Mrs S. Parr contributed a song and received an enthusiastic encore. Disappointment was expressed at the absence of Mrs Maedonel, of Palmerston, who had intended contributing fan item, but was unable to attend. During the afternoon Rev. J. Farnell and Mrs Farnell attended. An enjoyable afternoon tea was dispensed, and a satisfactory amount from the entertainment was handed in to the sccreOn Friday next the Druids will hold thoir euchre evening and' dance. Tho monthly meeting of the school committee was held on Monday evening, Mr R. W. Guy occupying the chair. Other members present were Messrs McClure (hon. secretary), J. R. Kelly, G. Lampard, J. Schwass, G. Walton and E. Titcombe Mr Hickson (headmaster) was also present. The report read as follows: Roll number 138, average attendance last month 124.1, meaning an absence of 14 children daily. Mr Powell, assistant architect, visited the school on 28th ult., accompanied by Mr Atkins, a member of tho Wellington Education Board. They discussed matters regarding tho decoration of the upper class-room. Mr Hickson drew attention to lack of ventilation in the infant room, and the absence of a window-pole and hooks. The pole end hooks arrived tho following week. Mr Powell said that authorisation for the repairs tio the school fence had been given. The school was closed on the 4th (election day). Miss Cruickshank returned to duty on Monday, 19th October. The work of the school was progressing satisfactorily. During tho week tho committeemen visited the Shannon School to inspect the playground equipment, and expressed approval. A resolution was passed to proceed with the erection of swings, ladders, trapeze, Roman rings, etc. It was proposed by Mr Titcombe and seconded by Mr Schwass that Messrs Guy and McClure be appointed to make arrangements regarding material for the same. This matter was discussed at length. The ntonarrival of the gramophone and the flag was mentioned. Mr Hickson stated that a few desks required repairing, Mr Guy offering to do the necessary repairs. Tho rules, were discussed in connection with the tennis courts and players are to apply to the head teacher for the use of the court. The rulo made last year of Is per hour is to be adhered to; aho that the court may be used bofore 8 o’clock or after 4 p.m.
