TIMBER INDUSTRY.
GLOOMY OUTLOOK IN TASMANIA MILLS BEING CLOSED. Received November 10, 11.0 a.m. HOBART, Nov. 10. The outlook for the Tasmanian timber industry is gloofny. The firm of John Hay Proprietary, Ltd., has ceased operations, rendering idle 300 employees. It is expected that other firms will also close, causing a complete cessation of the industry. The first-named firm explains that its action is the result of the poor market, the heavy importations of cheap foreign timber, and the exorbitant claims of the Timber Workers’ Union, which have made it impossible to operate a umber mill in Tasmania except at a loss. —Press Association.
