ALLEGED LIBEL.
HEAVY DAMAGES CLAIMED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Nov. 10. A suit for £IO,OOO damages for alleged libel was commenced in the Supreme Court to-day against the New Zealand Truth, the plaintiff being Alice Maud Ward, wife of Louis Wellington Ward, surveyor, of Dannevirke. The defendants named are Henry Renata Clayton, publisher, and Fred J. Earle, editor of Truth. The alleged libel was an article entitled “Alice, Where Art Thou?” published on 2nd February, in which plaintiff was referred to as a “lady notorious for her bombastic and pummelistic tendencies” and as having established a reign of terror in Dannevirke.
The defence admitted publication, but denied that the report was false and malicious. It consisted in part of a report of judicial proceedings and in part of comment on the proceedings and plaintiff’s behaviour and conduct during the proceedings. The case is being heard before Mr Justice Macgregor and a jury of twelve.
