STEAMERS IN COLLISION.
MARELLA’S PLATES RIPPED. A SUPERSTITIOUS CREW. SINGAPORE, Oct. 25. The Burns Philp steamer Marella (7475 tons) collided vith an oil-tanker in Singapore Roads during a squall last evening. ' Nine feet of plates outside the Marella’s engine room were ripped, and when she was towed in for docking she had 15ft of water in the engine room. The holds, however, were intact.
There was no panic, and, the passengers who were on board were taken off by the Italian cruiser San Giorgio and landed on shore. LONDON, Oct. 26. The Singapore correspondent of the Daily Mail, who is travelling by The Marella, cables that tho superstitious among the crew had been prophesying a wreck since leaving Sydney, because a bishop and a hearso were aboard. The collision with the oil tanker Conus (5578 tons), ho says, was inexplicable. there being good visibility and no traffic.
The Rt. Rev. E. D. L. Danson, Bishop of Labuan and Sarawak, ’-as returning by the Marella. A hearse was among the cargo consigned from Sydney to Darwin.
