WEAKNESS OF ROOF COVERING.

A MATTER OF URGENCY

At tho monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board last night, a letter waa received from Central School Commit-

tee requesting that attention be given to various matters including conveniences, electric light, cupboards, blackboards and roof. Tho urgency of the need for repairs to the flat roof at tho school ,vi,s stressed, immediate attention being necessary to save tho understructurc from decaying, while the committee was of opinion that tho question of a new roof would have to bo faced in tho near future. The board’s architect, in referring to tho mattor, mentioned that ho bad drawn attention to tho necessity of rc-covcring the roof on more than one occasion, adding that it would bo preferable that the roof covering bo of a permanent material. He recommended tho boird to consider the advisability of application to the do. partment for a grant to cover tho cost of a “pitched” roof, tho estimato of. which would not lio less than £I6OO. A bituminous covering would cost £llOO. Tho chairman (Mr W. it. Collins) remarked that the roof had been a vexed question since-it was put in. Something had to bo dono about tho mattor as water was damaging the "walls. lho chairman advocated a “pitched” roof and it was decided to make application to the department for a grant to execute this work. Tho architect’s recommendations regarding minor matters were adopted, the iequests boing granted.
