GREATLY EXAGGERATED.

STATEMENTS AIIOUT MINING

Per Press Association.

WELLINGTON, May 20. When interviewed regarding Mr Kirkwood’s a #icle in tho London Daily Herald concerning the condition of miners in New Zealand, in which he quoted from a letter from the secretary of the Hikurangi Coalminers’ Union, the Minister for Mines said ; “All I can say is that the whole statement is greatly exaggerated, and it is a great pity people living in New Zealand should go out of their way to speak of their country in such a mailner. The Government,” added tho Minister, “has not assisted in any way the immigration of miners into the country for many months past. Any miners who have come out in recent months have come out at their own expense and their own risk, so far as the Government is concerned.”
