TOKOMARU.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) On Thursday evening a memorial service to the late Prime Minister was held in the Public Hall at 7 p.m. Despite the inclement weather, a fair number of people braved the elementa to do honour to the lute Mr Massey. The service was conducted by the Rev. Mr Stewart and the Rev. Mr Farnell, who journeyed up from Shannon for the occasion, Mr Lonpard kindly motoring to and from Shannon to convey them thither. After a short service, Mr J. R. Whyte proposed a motion of condolence with the members of the late Mr Massey's family. After the pronouncing of the Benediction, Mis 3 Aim, of Shannon, who bail presided at the piano, played the Dead March (Sau ), the audience standing in silent tribute.

At the monthly meeting of the Horowhenua. County Council, Mr W. H. Miles pointed out the necessity of repairs to the footpath from the railway bridge to Nikau road, and that a light was badly needed on this length of road. The matter was referred to Councillor Whyte and the engineer with power to act. Mr W. R. Mullins stated there had' boon no surfaceman on the Victoria road for twelve months, and asked for some improvements. This matter was also referred to Cr. Whyte and the engineer with power to act. Mr J. Schwass referred to the bad condition of the road leading from tho Main road to his property. Cr. Whyte said the road was very little used, and the engineer stated that £2(l had leer expended on it. The matter is to bo given consideration on the new estimates. A timber company wrote pointing out that a largo quantity of timber on their property at piesont could not be got out. They understood the Council wii.s considering the construction of a new road into the Tokomaru Valley, and hoped tho road would be- proceeded with immediately. The chaiimun stated that the road was an extension of the Tokomaru Valiev road from Nash’s. He would suggest finding out what the company was prepared to do and perhaps they would form a special rating district, as the work could not be done out of revenue.

On the evening of the 15th inst. another successful*euchre party and dance was held in the hall, satisfactory arrangements being carried out by the school committee. Mrs J. Anderson wc-.i the first prize for euchre, and six Indies cut for the consolation prize, which finally fell to Miss Emilv Milne. Mr Percy Co eman and Mr Waf ton cut for the men’s prize, the latter be ing the winner. Mr G. Schwass and Mr J. Dnlziell cut for the consolation prize, Mr J. Dalziell proving the winner. On account of the footballers’ ball being held next F ritlay, there will be no euchre evening, the 'committee consenting to stand out in favour 'of the footballers.
