LEVIN TO MARTON.

“HUGE EXPENDITURE WOULD BE CRIMINAL.” BACKBLOC’KS SETTLERS NEED CONSIDERATION. References to the agitation for the Levin-Marlon railway deviation were made at the meeting of tile Oroua County Council at Feilding yesterday, states the ’‘Standard's” correspondent. In introducing the subject the chairman (CT. McKlroy) said tbut the various comity councils had been too slack in opposing ihe question. To ask the Government to spend so much money on this line when there was such a lot ’to be done in the baekblocks was almost criminal. It might be all right for the globe trotters but he felt tliut the country settlers were entitled to more consideration and he thought that the council should take some action. (V. Vincent said he thought the reason Palmerston Noi'th was not represented at the meeting at Levin was because it had a very live member in Mr Nash and he evidently considered it unnecessary lo have Palmerston North represented. (Jr. McLennan thought it showed weakness on the part of the Government in allowing the commissioners to’ have the order of reference. (Jr. Greenhow considered that the matter could he safely left in the hands of the member for the district. It seemed to him that the sinking of the railway at Palmerston North was the best ideu. Whether’ the deviation would lake place no one could say. Cr. Brewster said that one must look ahead and, further, , there would be the duplication of the line to be considered. Finally, it was decided to await the commissioners’ report before taking any further action.
