HAND CARNIVAL. BALANCE-SHEET. (From Our Own Correspondent). Th& balance-sheet issued by • the band carnival treasurer (Mr J. N., Rider) and audited by Mr Win. Trueman, town clerk, in connection with, the recent carnivul is as follows: —Receipts totalled £BSB los lOcl, and were made up as follows: Advertising space in carnival book £ls 2s 6d, citizens’ queen £3Ol 6s 9d, sports queen £206 Is sd, farmers’ queen £l6B 14s lid, fire brigade queen £l3O 2s 6d. coronation concert £37 5s 9d. The expenditure totalled £239 Is Id, and was made up as follows: Printing and advertising £3B 3s 6d, 'phone charges £6 15s sd, benzine und cartage £5 19s, car hire £1 10s, tuning pianos £4 16s, presents to queens £l2 12s, donations to queens dresses £2O, orchestra for coronation £3, hail rent for coronation and rehearsals £5, printing and signwriting £2 13s 6d, trip round New Zealand competition £l4 Is Bd, petty expenses £ls 2s 6d, Miss Healey’s (organiser) fifteen per cent on £728 19s 3d, £lO9 6s 6d, balance at bank £619 12s 9d. Tlie carnival thus shows a net sum of £619 12s 9d as having been raised. BOROUGH COUNCIL. At Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council it was decided to grant Mr H. Reid a fortnight’s holiday after the Christmas season, provided he cun find someone willing to act as operator during his absence, the town clerk to arrange for payment of wages, etc. It was decided tliut the council meet at 7.30 p.m. on meeting nights during the summer, instead of 7 p.m. ns at present; aLo to expend the sum of £2 10s on enlarging the counter at the Town Hall shop. It was proposed by Cr. Smith and seconded by Cr. Ross. “That the council expresses ’ it 3 keen appreciation of the efforts of the Levin-Marton Railway League (especially the executive) in obtaining Ministerial consent to a survey of the proposed route, together with estimate of cost; also for obtaining consent to the English Railway Commissioners to take evidence and inspect the proposed route; .further that this council heartily supports them in their work and trusts that in view of the fact that the proposed deviation is a national work, their efforts will be crowned with success; further, that this council makes a donation of £5 towards the funds of the league.—Carried. The waterworks engineer is to report on the udvisability of extending the water main to the end of Frances street. It was agreed that the street lighting agreement be signed and scaled in the presence of the Mayor and Crs. Bryant and Smith. The registration fee for dogs for 1925 is to be as follows:—All bona Tide sheep and cattle dogs, 2s 6d all others, 10s; fees to be due and payable on 31st January, after which 'date summonses will he issued. It was decided that the Mayor and town clerk wait on the Horowhenua Electric Poiver Board at its next meeting, with a view to coming to some workable arrangement regarding gas and electricity in this district. The work of asphalting the Cook street footpath is to be deferred in tiie' meantime, and the of Russell and Johnston streets is to ho done. The matter of scooping a six-foot ledge at the Band cutting in Avenue road was referred back to the contractor. PLUNKET SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of the local branch of tho Plunket Society was held on Monday afternoon, Mrs I’. Robinson (president) being in the chair. Nurse Hughes’s monthly report showed that three visits had been made to # Loxton; visits to homes 13, adults to office 28, children to office 21, new cases one It was decided that the next meeting of the committee be held on the usual day . m February, the secretary to call a meeting in January if necessary. Mrs Walton and committee agreed to hold a shop day on the first Saturday in February while Mrs Frank Robinson and committee will make their effort in January. Mesdames Chystall and Rimmer were appointed visitors tor the ensuing month, and Mesdames Rearson and Proctor for January. \ Tho 1 lower steward for December will be Mrs Rowley and for January, Mrs D. Christie. Mr A. E. Admore, who some six weeks ago met with an accident to his leg, has now returned to his home, and is able to get about again with the aid of crutches.
