AMERICA’S FORCES.
INCREASE RECOMMENDED. WASHINGTON, Nov. 29. General Pershing to-day made a final report as Chief of Staff and General Officer of the United Stales Armies. He recommends a greatly enlarged air force, the lack of which is now the chief weakness of the national defence, also an increase of the regular army from 118,000 to 150,000 and the national guard from 176,000 to 200,000. He also asks for the strengthening of the overseas garrisons and improved coast defence with long-range railway artillery. Other recommendations include the appointment of six major-generals who served in France as permanent lieutenant-generals, also a larger ammunition reserve supply and periodic exercises of the national defence units similar to those on the recent defence day and more citizens’ training camps. General Pershing is opposed to the establishment of a separate air force similar t-o the British.
Mr Weeks, Secretary for War, delivered his annual report embodying practically afl General Pershing’s recommendations. —A. and N.Z. cable.
