BRITAIN’S WORD

PROMISES OBSERVED. REPLY MADE TO CRITICISM. [By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.] Received'December 1, 9.5 a.m. WASHINGTON. Nov. 30. _ Addressing the Southern Society, the British Ambassador, Sir Esme Howard, said that Britain was carrying out the terms of the Washington Treaty limiting naval armaments. Replying io statements that had been made that England was not adhering to her .obligations, the Ambassador said lie, attached no importance to such talk or the criticism based upon it. “In order,” said Sir Esme Howard, “that you gentlemen who live near the seashore may not think it necessary for the safety of your families to purchase homes far inland because of ‘perfidious Albion’ secretly breaking her engagements, I will say to-day that the British Government has not received from any of the signatories to the treaty any protest or observation whatever tending to show that they have the slightest notion that Britain is not carrying out her side according to the* letter and the spirit. 1 presume all these Governments cannot have sunk into a condition of coma nor are they completely indifferent to the interests of the countries they govern so that it is left to private citizens to make these alarming disclosures.” —Reuter.
