RADIO CLUB

LECTURE ON BATTERIES. There was a good attendance of members of the Palmerston North Radio Club at a meeting last night, when Mr B. F. Hunter occupied the chair. " ' Letters were received from Messrs 1'• J. Nathan and Keiller accepting the offices of president and vice-presi-dent respectively. Tho committee’s recommendation that the Linton Rifle Club’s offer of club rooms be accepted was adopted. It was decided that the secretary should go into the matter oi having tho club registered under the Unclassified Societies Act. A very lion-technical lecture was then given by the chairman on the subject of storage batteries, with special reference to those used in wireless. The speaker stated at the outset that lie desired liis auditors . to disabuse their minds of the idea that a lead acid battery . actually stored up electricity. The so-called storage battery was an electro-chemical apparatus for the generation of electricity. The charging of a battery caused an elec-tro-chemical action between the positive and negative plates in the presence oi a medium known as electrolyte. Tlie construction of the positive and negative plates was dealt fullywith by the speaker, who pointed out the difference between the pastes with which tlie plates were- pasted. Separator or wooden mats were next dealt with, and tlie treatment necessary to produce a chemically pure separator was explained. Specific gravity’ was fully gono into, and the correct way 1

to obtain a true reading was demonstrated. One point the speaker emphasised was tho fact that acid should on no account he added to a battery, the only tiling necessary being the addition of pure distilled water. On the motion of Mr Thomas Lind, a hcai ty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Hunter for his able and instructive lecture.
