FAMOUS LABOUR LEADER.
NEW YORK, July 13. Mr Samuel Gompers, president of the United States Amalgamated Federation of Labour, is suuering from a general breakdown, and probably wifc not recover. r
Mr Gompers, although largely r& pudiated by the advanced sections of Labour, is still one of the most outstanding personalities. He is president of tlie largest labour organisation in America. He was born in England m 1850, and was a cigarmaker by trade. Ho lias been an advocate of the rights of labour since the age of fourteen, and one of the founders of tlie Federation of Trades and Labour Unions and the American Federation of Labour. He was a member of the advisory committee of tho Council of National Defence from 1917-19, and represented his federation at tho Peace Conference at Paris, 1918-19. Ho is the author of a number of works dealing with international labour problems.
